I have lived in Plymouth all my life, apart from when I ventured all the way to the next county for two years whilst studying in Taunton! After spending a year as an Artist in Residence at Notre Dame School, I went on to Marjon’s to become a Design & Technology teacher and then taught at both of Plymouth’s Grammar Schools for girls. After giving up ‘paid’ work to raise a family, I have returned to the school environment I enjoy. I now work part time in the Design and Technology department of the boy’s Grammar School as a technician so that I am able to devote more time to my painting.
Whilst being involved with various creative disciplines including ceramics, textiles, glass, wood and metalwork, I have always painted. Because my styles and applications have been so varied I considered myself to be a ‘Jack of all trades and master of none’. However, I have grown to appreciate the freedom of expression that varied skills and experiences bring, adding to my enjoyment of the creative process as well as the finished piece.
In 1989 I met Paul who became my husband five years later and we now have two wonderful children, Hazel and Tom. In 1992 I came to faith as a Christian, followed by Paul some 18 months after and since then we have worshipped with the lively congregations known as Mutley Baptist Church and Plymouth Vineyard Church. God is central to my life which means that whilst most of my paintings are not overtly ‘religious art’, my faith underpins them all.
