For a few years now, I have been bringing my sketchbook and pencils to church in order to ‘draw’ the sermons. This means I can instantly respond with some of my own thoughts and questions as I put words and pictures on a page, enabling me to ‘see’ the sermons as well as hear them. Sometimes I already know what I want to draw, and then the sermon just seems to fit. People often wonder if I am able to concentrate on what is being said. Actually my mind is concentrating very much whilst ‘freely doodling’ – like someone would when on the telephone. And not unlike a child, it does keep me well behaved during the service …it’s just the pencil sharpening that my husband says can be a bit distracting!
I have made some sketches available for you (spelling mistakes and all) because others have found them helpful and interesting to look at. For me, visually capturing the sermons through this colourful note taking is like an aid to memoir: I can reflect back upon what I’ve heard and hopefully remember some of the lessons beyond Sunday! Perhaps you would be encouraged to try this method for yourself and ‘see’ your own response and observations.
If you would like to listen to any of the sermons just click play (where available).
