It’s a privilege to be invited back as an artist, for this annual multi denominational Christian event in Minehead. It will be good to meet up with fellow artist Debs Last, as we paint in the Big Top every day in front of four thousand guests – yikes! Guess it’s time to practice painting big and fast! Here’s a flavour of this years theme.

The 66 volumes by more than three-dozen authors make this book we call the Bible, a little library. It’s a repository of reference; a treasure chest of truth; a library of lives. Core themes run like rivers through the texts. Questions asked in ages past are answered in dreams of the future. Promises made in times of need are fulfilled in times of grace.

This event is held at Butlins Minehead which is on the Somerset coast, South West of Bristol,

A Sense of Place in Time
My work always has a narrative and the titles I’ve given the paintings are important to me. But the narrative is not limited to the words I have chosen. As you respond to what you see, you are invited to be a part of the story.
Recently, somebody was looking at this sunset painting and asked if I had intended including a bridge within it, commenting that it had a celestial feel. He did not know that it was called ‘How Great Thou Art’ and indeed points to the Ultimate Creator. There is an old proverb saying, “Life is a bridge. Cross over it, but build no house on it”. This reminds me that I am here for a purpose but not at my final destination. So I can only think of my ‘Sense of Place in Time’ in the light of eternity. My earthly existence is a fleeting breath of about 75 years if I’m lucky – until death demolishes my body.
I have included the painting of Plymouth because it is the ‘Place’ where I have lived so far. Since its completion, the landscape has already changed. The demolition of the huge Grain Silo caused quite a stir, but a few years later I don’t suppose it’s hardly thought of. A sobering reminder of what happens with the passing of time.
I find it liberating, when I think about living in the present whilst simultaneously looking beyond the here and now: this brings a freedom to my soul.
